The remodeling firm was chosen by the more than 11 million monthly users that comprise the Houzz community.The Houzz “Best Of Remodeling” award for 2013 is given in two categories: Customer Satisfaction and Design. Customer Satisfaction award winners are based on homeowner members who rated their experience working with remodeling professionals in 12 categories ranging from architects and interior designers to contractors and other residential remodeling professionals.

Reputable design-build firms tackle the problem of controlling costs by constant and open communication with clients, says Armando Flores, president and CEO of Charco Design & Build of San Diego. He describes Charco as a “boutique construction company,” whose clients come to San Diego from all over the world, including Russia, Mexico and Europe.”I want to educate homeowners on what to expect,” he says. “It’s more of a hand-holding experience.”He achieves transparency by using either fixed-cost contracts, which set the price of each component in a specification, or cost-plus contracts, which allow for more pricing flexibility. That’s important, because some of Flores’ clients aren’t always sure what they want.He recalls one project that stands out as a $150,000 kitchen remodel. However, the scope of the project continued to expand and became a total house remodel. The project ended up costing about $1.3 million.

As if summer light has finally arrived after a long dark winter, a gloomy, outdated 1956 ranch-style home in the Muirlands has become a sunny, open contemporary showcase with snowy white interiors.

The homeowners, who live in Moscow, like to spend time in La Jolla and transformed the house into a vacation destination for their family. Now the warmth of our Mediterranean climate floods the interiors with sunlight through walls of glass, ceilings raised to 14 feet and skylights in hallways and bathrooms.

Materials that provide high contrast between light and dark, textural and reflective surfaces are used throughout. A brilliant high note is the see-through partition in the great room with a design reminiscent of crackled ice by furniture craftsman Clyde Turner.

Q: What are the key influences in your work today?
A: Reading architecture and design books influences me, but travel gives me the most inspiration. Seeing architectural styles around the world greatly contributes to my designs.

Q: What makes your work distinctive?
A: I give my clients boutique-style service through great customer service and custom designs. I adapt every project to fit the homeowner’s needs and provide quality products.

“I think between the architecture, the art and the art of cars, everything has almost the same lines.”
